Is that a fire in your navel?

Posted September 27, 2011

The latest for Science World, via Rethink, Vancouver directed by Holiday Films’ Wayne Craig, brings to life the strange but true fact that belly button lint makes great kindling. Who knew?

“Working with Science World is a great opportunity creatively”, says Nicolas Quintal, Creative Director, Rethink, Vancouver. “As we are communicating to parents with kids we are able to have fun with then message and bring to life a lot of fun facts.”

Ever wonder where they come up with all these facts? The team at Rethink finds most of them online and then submits them to Science World to weed out the urban myths from the truths. Some little known knowledge from past ads in the campaign include:

Your body contains enough carbon to fill 9,000 pencils.

Most lipstick contains fish scales.

Tigers will use a litter box.

A sneeze can travel 12 feet and hover for three hours.

“Beach Time” was shot at the Scarborough Bluffs, Toronto and was edited by Melanie Hider at Bijou, the online visual effects were done by Sean Cochrane at The Vanity, and the on set visual effects were created by Jeff Skochko at JMS SPFX Ltd. Full credits.

Honey Badger

Posted September 26, 2011

To launch their new venture Honey Badger, Glossy worked with director James Frost and executive producer John Benson. Honey Badger is a director-driven production company focused on commercials, music videos, branded content and experiential projects.

You may recognize James Frost’s name – he’s directed over 80 music videos including the Grammy nominated, D&AD, UK MVA and AICP award winning video “House of Cards” for Radiohead, Coldplay’s “Yellow” and “This Too Shall Pass” for OK Go. He’s also directed many TV commercials including this one for DieHard batteries featuring Gary Newman and most recently this great Ford commercial via Ogilvy Paris (it’s “Cog” with dogs – what’s not to love about that?).

Ha! This actually made me laugh out loud. I love it. Carlsberg filled a movie theatre with Bikers and left only two seats available, right in the middle, to see what couples would do. Watch it.

Ah – Friday.

To celebrate all that is Friday, here’s a beautiful visually-driven narrative film for Sicilian winery Tasca D’almerita created by Mosaicoon. The film is not what you think – which is as refreshing as a glass of wine on a Friday after work – through suggestive images it tells you how to drink a glass of Sicily in 7 easy steps. Thanks to Alba for sending it my way. Cin cin!

Honey Badger Plants Roots in LA

Posted September 23, 2011

Director James Frost and Executive Producer John Benson have teamed-up and launched Honey Badger, a director-driven production company focused on commercials, music videos, branded content and experiential projects.

In addition to six directors with diverse backgrounds, the company’s experiential team includes a designer and live screen content director, a creative producer/show runner, and an art director who conceive, design and produce a wide range of experiential projects and live events.

You may recognize James Frost’s name from this blog (among many other places). He’s directed over 80 music videos including a Grammy nominated, D&AD, UK MVA and AICP award winning video for Radiohead “House of Cards,” Coldplay’s “Yellow” and “This Too Shall Pass” for OK Go. He’s also directed many TV commercials including this one for DieHard batteries featuring Gary Newman and most recently this great Ford commercial via Ogilvy Paris (it;s “Cog” with dogs – what’s not to love about that?).

Benson’s career spans time at Industrial Light + Magic, VFX/production company The Orphanage, web startup Spot Runner, and experiential design company Frank The Plumber.

“We’re seeing the fusion and integration of media – film, art, live experiences, fashion, and music are all interacting simultaneously. Honey Badger is working at those crossroads,” says Benson.

Congrats guys. I’m looking forward to seeing your new work.

Yikes. “Born in T.” (you have to say it “born in tee dot”).

People of the world, please do not think that this beer packaging design represents Toronto’s design aesthetic. There’s a lot of great Canadian design. This is not it.
