Red Urban sees their global role – and a few bellies – expand with new work for Volkswagen Germany.

How does one introduce a brand new car with powerful acceleration? Well, by showing the hilarious physical consequences of said acceleration, of course. Which is exactly what Toronto advertising agency Red Urban has done in their new Golf GTD spots, the latest example of their increasing role producing global creative work for Volkswagen.

As part of an integrated campaign overseen by DDB Team Blue, the five 15-second spots were filmed on location in Toronto over the course of two days. Featuring several locations, a car-mounted camera and plenty of prop gags, the shoot was no small undertaking. But Red Urban and Untitled Films‘ director Curtis Wehrfritz were up to the challenge, pulling it off on time and with minimal sanity loss. The spots were edited by Rooster’s Jesse Unruh and Chris Parkins. With flying ice cream, expanding waistlines and a mutilated pizza, the spots comically convey the cars powerful acceleration.

Red Urban has owned the Volkswagen brand in Canada for 3.5 years, developing brand strategy and creative work for their market. But the agency is also part of Team Blue, a partnership of Volkswagen agencies from around the world that collaborate on certain projects. Christina Yu, Executive Creative Director of Red Urban Canada, has quickly grown her profile within the global Volkswagen network.

“After several years of working on global creative for Volkswagen, the network has come to appreciate our creative sensibilities and how we capture the Volkswagen brand,” said Steve Carli, President of Red Urban Canada. “Christina has become a real leader on global creative projects.”

While the Golf GTD campaign might be the newest global creative work from Red Urban, it certainly won’t be the last. Team Blue is looking for Yu to expand her role as a creative leader on global Volkswagen advertising projects, something she’s looking forward to.

“The chance to work on global projects is an amazing opportunity for Red Urban,” said Yu. “We’re looking forward to continued success from this collaboration.”
