The Listings List

My friend, contortionist and commercial film director Aleysa Young has started her first blog based on an obsession with the classifieds. No, not the personals, but furniture and other household items.
“I have a passion for design, but I’m inherently cheap,” says Young. “So the classifieds appeal to my desire to find these things together. It’s true what they say about one man’s junk being another one’s treasure. In my case, it’s also sick pleasure.”
Hence The Listings List was born. It’s a collection of current items for sale in the Toronto area, mixed in with Aleysa’s unique personal whit.
Here’s a Q&A with Aleysa Young on the project.
Q: How often do you “creep” the the classifieds? How long have you had this obsession?
Aleysa: It started years ago out of necessity to furnish my house, then I was doing it for friends. I was checking so often that I developed a habit. It became automatic, like an involuntary tick. Every morning I would do a check and it quickly became an unhealthy form of procrastination. I kept finding things but had no more room in my house to buy them. I briefly started an email list with friends sending them a selection every few days, but even they ran out of places for it.
Q: Why did you decide to start this blog?
Aleysa: It started it on a whim born of a particularly good day on Craigslist. There were so many great things, and I was out of people to forward them to. I needed an outlet and I thought someone out there would appreciate it, so I learned Tumblr and by 3AM, I had a website.
Q: What’s in the future for The Listings List?
Aleysa: I’d like to develop more usability like a ‘sold’ notification, perhaps even offer a customized service and I’m working on an app. I’d also love to do other cities, but let’s see how Toronto goes first.
Q: Anything else I should know about this project?
Aleysa: It was an attempt to be more productive with my procrastination but instead I fear, it’s made it worse.
