This Hockey Net Is Woven From Hospital Bracelets Representing 122,008 Lives Saved
The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s “Carry The Fire Road Hockey Net” marks 15 years of the world’s largest road hockey fundraiser in support of cancer research.
The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation has unveiled ‘The Carry The Fire Road Hockey Net,’ a hockey net woven from hospital bracelets to represent the lives saved and impacted through The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
Each hospital bracelet woven into the net represents 225 cancer survivors, with the finished piece visually symbolizing the 122,008 lives saved and impacted through the Cancer Centre’s trailblazing work since the inaugural Road Hockey Event in 2011.
The specially crafted net highlights a powerful message: while the objective in a road hockey game is clear – score more goals – the mission in cancer research and treatment is far more significant: saving lives.
The net was created to mark the 15th anniversary of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s Road Hockey Event, an annual fundraiser that brings together thousands of players, donors, volunteers and celebrity ambassadors in support of cancer research and care. Since launching in 2011, it has grown to become the world’s largest road hockey fundraiser in support of cancer research.
“Over the past 15 years, thousands of players, donors, volunteers, and celebrity ambassadors have rallied on the pavement to support Princess Margaret’s world-leading research and treatment,” said Melanie Johnston, Chief Marketing Officer at The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. “This net serves as an unforgettable symbol of why we play. Every bracelet woven into this frame represents real stories, real hope, and real lives saved thanks to the unwavering generosity of our community.”
Developed in creative partnership with T&P Group, the installation transforms an everyday piece of sports equipment into a physical representation of the impact of fundraising. The net was featured at centre stage during the event’s opening ceremony and the ‘shoot for $100K contest,’ before touring prominent locations across Canada and ultimately being permanently installed at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. A plaque accompanying the display includes an interactive QR code that lets onlookers donate directly.
“Unignorable creative ideas should make you feel something,” said Krystle Mullin, Chief Creative Officer at T&P Group. “By transforming hospital wristbands, symbols of patient journeys, into the fabric of a hockey net, we created an unmistakable visual metaphor for strength and resilience. Turning standard sports equipment into an emotional reminder that every dollar raised helps save more lives.”
